The Longest Stretch
The 106-mile stretch between Salida (Hwy 50) and Lake City (Spring Creek Pass on CO 149) is notorious. For me, coming off the Collegiate East, it encompassed segments 15 – 21. Not only are you preparing for a longer than average food carry, but the Cochetopa Hills mean water sources are limited and often contaminated by cattle poop. Pretty gross water. Once you emerge from the dusty ranch land, you’re catapulted into the San Juan Mountains with plenty of above tree line exposure and scree fields. …
