I left Damascus before dawn with a bad attitude. I really did not want to hike another detour. Missing Whitetop Mountain and a couple other sites because of the lousy detour is a big downer. But, I decided that a continuous footpath and my safety (not doing a dangerous road walk) were more important. So, off to the detour I went with a long day ahead to get to Thomas Knob shelter.
