Bottom Line

We love the simple design of the Kelty Galactic 30, finding it to be a flexible and lightweight option perfect for summer nights and warm climates. With its roomy rectangular build, it’s a spacious choice if you move around in your sleep or just want more space to spread out. The wrap-around zipper allows the bag to transform into a quilt, providing even greater versatility for your sleeping arrangement.

This bare-bones option lacks some of the design hallmarks of other sleeping bags, such as a hood or a stash pocket. And the stripped-down build means it won’t keep you as warm or well-insulated. But for summertime camping, the Galactic is light, comfortable, and an easy take-along option thanks to its compact packed size.

Comfort

Kelty employs a rectangular shape for the Galactic 30, which makes it an especially roomy option, particularly compared to narrower mummy bags. Its wide boxy shape provides space to shift around, change positions effortlessly, and spread out your limbs. Those who appreciate room to move while they sleep will gravitate towards the Galactic’s spacious build.

The only downfall we found with the bag’s shape was its overall length. Even at 5-feet, 7-inches, tester Marion’s head stuck outside the bag, and she found it a bit short for her taste. Without a hood, the head rests on the ground, making it more comfortable to use the Galactic with a pillow.

The bag’s fabric is smooth on bare skin, albeit a bit slippery. While sleeping in the Galactic, we slid around inside the bag and had a difficult time keeping it properly positioned on our sleeping pad.

Warmth

The lightweight design of the Kelty Galactic 30 is best reserved for warmer-weather adventures. Rated for 30°F, we found ourselves reaching for extra layers when using the Galactic during a night in the mid-30s. The bag’s 550-fill-power down insulation is cushy and cozy, but not dense enough to provide solid insulation in cooler temperatures. Based on our testing, we found the bag a more comfortable fit when the temperature minimum was in the mid-40s.

Kelty also chooses not to equip the Galactic with many of the features that help keep a sleeping bag warmer. Most strikingly, it doesn’t have a hood or neck collar. So warm air easily escapes from the bag’s interior. The top of the bag does cinch, though, allowing a tight fit around the neck in lieu of a draft collar. We often end up being beanie-wearers when sleeping outside to minimize heat loss from the head. Without a built-in hood, this proved a necessary move for us when using the Galactic.

The Kelty Galactic isn’t the warmest sleeping bag available, but for warm nights and hot climates, its minimalist build and light design make it an ideal choice.

Weight & Packed Size

Weighing 2 pounds, 14.4 ounces, the Kelty Galactic 30 is on the lighter end of camping sleeping bags. If its minimalist design doesn’t prove a deterrent, the Galactic sits on the threshold of being light enough to use as a sleep system for backpacking, especially for shorter or lower-mileage trips.

The Galactic comes with a standard stuff sack that packs down to 12 by 6 inches. We found that to be a nice compact shape that made it easy to stuff the bag into a pack or a fully loaded car for effortless transport. We tested the Galactic with one of our own compression sacks as well, and could shrink it into an even smaller shape.

Features

The Kelty Galactic 30 prioritizes a lightweight, simple design, so it doesn’t have many extra features to enhance its practicality or ease of use. The bag has a full-length two-way zipper, which lets the Galactic become a quilt or offer selective ventilation — something we appreciated for letting our feet get some extra air. The zipper moves smoothly in both directions, although we did experience some snagging on the draft tube.

The Galactic is truly a no-frills sleeping bag, favoring minimalism over flashy or potentially unnecessary add-ons.

Should You Buy the Kelty Galactic 30?

The Kelty Galactic 30 is an excellent choice for summertime simplicity. When you know you’re going to be camping in warm climates, the Galactic keeps things breathable and lightweight, while not sacrificing comfort. The rectangular design and the doubling of the Galactic as a quilt enable greater flexibility when using this bag, making it an ideal choice for those who want to move and spread out while sleeping.

Those who want more padded support or insulating elements, like a hood or draft collar, will probably want to look elsewhere, as will folks who run cold at night. The Kelty’s minimalist qualities mean the bag won’t keep you as toasty in cooler temperatures, but the Galactic shines in its lightweight and portable build that’s perfectly suited for warm weather.

What Other Camping Sleeping Bags Should You Consider?

Are you wondering how the Kelty Galactic 30 stacks up against our other top picks? Find out on our best camping sleeping bags list. And consider these awesome alternatives:

The North Face Wawona Bed 20 Review: Another no-frills sleeping bag option, the North Face Wawona Bed 20 has a design similar to the Galactic, with its spacious rectangular shape. Although heavier and made with synthetic fill, the Wawona is extra cozy thanks to its bed-like fleece lining.

Coleman Brazos 30 Review: One of the most budget-friendly sleeping bags available, the Coleman Brazos has the build of the Galactic at less than half the cost. Better suited for car camping and frontcountry use, and not as durable as the Kelty, the Brazos is a minimalist bag that makes for a comfortable warm-weather sleep setup.

REI HunkerDown 20 Review: The HunkerDown is also a rectangular down bag, but with more features and better heat retention than the Galactic. When you want a roomy fit but need a bag that keeps you warm in colder weather, the HunkerDown is not only rated for cooler temps but also features a hood and draft collar to help you stay warmer outdoors.
