Satellite messengers have come a long way since 2011, when DeLorme released the inReach, the first satellite communicator capable of two-way texting. Fifteen years later, satellite messengers, and the inReach in particular, have become ubiquitous on trails around the world, where they’re an essential tool for triggering an SOS and staying in touch when far from home. With the Plus, Garmin drastically expanded the inReach’s feature set, giving users the ability to send photos and voice messages using a linked smartphone, as well as expanding the character limit on text messages from 160 to 1,600. In a test in Colorado’s West Elk Wilderness, we found that messages sent in just a few seconds, as opposed to the minute or more that older models could take—and all this at just 4 grams heavier than its predecessor, the inReach Messenger.
