Our trek of the Longwood forest trail was met with much stalling. Unsurprisingly, no one was in a rush to get covered in mud.
What’s more, flashbacks of Raetea forest in Northland kept creeping in. Raetea was a steep, muddy, slippery forest which took nearly thirteen hours to travel 20 kms through.
Many hikers found themselves injured or with broken poles after Raetea. While we were lucky escaping mostly unscathed, the mud left quite the impression rounding off our first week on the Te Araroa trail. …
