The Do-It-All Shoes for Go-Anywhere Hikers

How about trail shoes that actually fit your feet? It’s a simple request from hikers and the foundation of Topo Athletic’s footwear, literally. A foot-shaped shoe delivers enhanced comfort and agility while enabling a natural stride, unlocking longer miles and a better feel. That’s why all Topo Athletic shoes feature three essential design elements: a roomy toe box for better stability on technical terrain, a secure midfoot and heel so you can trust every footstep, and a low heel-to-toe drop to encourage a comfortable hiking gait.

The brand’s trail shoes—the Traverse and the Terraventure 5—build on that design philosophy with hiking-specific features. These models sport grippy tread for any terrain, a protective rock plate in the forefoot, and quick-drying insoles for powering through puddles and creek crossings. That kind of attention to detail has earned Topo Athletic high praise from the hiking community: Four of the brand’s shoes landed on The Trek’s top 10 list for hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Every one of Topo Athletic’s shoes is designed with the Topo Promise—a commitment to authentic products, continuous improvement, transparency, and human connection. Here’s how these two models deliver.

Traverse

When Topo Athletic noticed more and more thru-hikers lacing into its shoes for extended trips—attracted by the brand’s light weight, durability, and comfortable fit—it decided to design a shoe specifically for the longest trails. Enter the Traverse, a thru-hike-ready low-top. This shoe notched a 2025 Top Gear Award from The Trek, thanks to a collection of smart features.

The Vibram Megagrip outsole provides superior traction on varied terrain, while its lugs easily shed mud and snow. The forefoot rock plate protects feet from sharp stones and adds extra stability when you’re hauling a backpack. Topo Athletic’s new FKT insole features closed-cell construction for cushioning and shedding water, so the shoe dries quickly, day after day. The upper’s tightly woven mesh also drains and dries swiftly. A TPU plastic piece at the back helps lock in the heel and serves as an easy gaiter attachment point. And at only 10.6 ounces for a men’s size 9 and 8.7 ounces for a women’s size 7, the Traverse travels light.

Terraventure 5

Sometimes the line between a hike and a trail run gets blurry. For those days, there’s the Terraventure 5. Now in its fifth iteration, this low-cushion favorite boasts an all-new upper with two different meshes. A ripstop mesh near the top of the midsole boosts abrasion resistance, while an open mesh over the top of the foot provides great ventilation. The Terraventure 5 now features the upgraded FKT insole for enhanced rebound and speedy drying. What hasn’t changed: the Vibram Megagrip outsole for excellent traction, the protective rock plate, and a low midsole for a stable, close-to-ground feel. At 10.3 ounces for a men’s size 9 and 8.4 ounces for a women’s size 7, this shoe won’t weigh you down.
