Hailey Bieber gets what she wants. Take, for instance, the new cover story in the spring issue of Interview magazine. The model, Rhode makeup entrepreneur and wife of Justin Bieber simply walked up to the mag’s editor-in-chief, Mel Ottenberg, at a party recently and asked for the cover, and voila! there she is, staring at us in a blue, cloud-flecked sky while wearing a golden hot pants and vest combo with matching bunny ears and furry ankle-high boots.
The headline says it all: “Nobody Says No to Hailey Bieber.”
And while the breezy conversation between the old friends mostly centered on Bieber’s fashion sense and her daily routines, it provided a small peek into the private world of one of pop culture’s most intriguing, often elusive couples. While the Biebers shared a pair of sushi-making date night videos back in December, Hailey noted at the top of the chat that she was rushing around doing errands in advance of a trip to Tokyo for Justin’s 32nd birthday in March. “It’s giving food and shopping,” Hailey said of the plans on their vacation.
“We like to eat and run around and drink yummy matchas and coffees and look at art and vintage shops. It’s our favorite city,” she revealed.
In addition to talking about the difficulty of navigating getting “a lot of love without getting a lot of hate,” Bieber said she has definitely noticed that she has become a kind of “street style” avatar for many young women who she’s clocked taking inspiration from her style. “I can see a lot of my influence in certain spaces, but I’m never going to be the person to look at the way a girl is dressed and be like, ‘I know I inspired her,’” said Bieber.
While she would never say it, Bieber loves seeing it and finds the imitation “super flattering and humbling,” noting that she’s also been super inspired by other women’s looks, including Rihanna, who she said is one of her biggest fashion icons. “Her style is an expression of her attitude and who she is as a person,” Bieber said.
And, for the record, she and Justin don’t really plan their outfits together, but they definitely are keenly aware of how they look and how they want to look next to each other when out in public. “We both just really like expressing ourselves through our style and supporting each other’s individualism,” she explained, saying that when they walk a red carpet together they make sure not to clash or “look crazy,” which doesn’t happen very often. “Obviously we’ll talk about what the other person’s wearing, but on a day-to-day basis I’m like, ‘I don’t give a s–t what you want to wear. Are you comfortable? Do you feel good?’ That’s all that matters to me.”
When it comes to the couple’s toddler, 18-month-old Jack Blues, Bieber said she often struggles with baby clothes that are overly patterned or have cutesy images of little animals on them, or ones that cheesily state “I love my mommy.” Not that there’s anything wrong with the, but Bieber said she prefers to dress Jack in a simpler way, focusing on big baggy sweats or jeans, a white T-shirt or a little hoodie. “Justin’s team has made him tons of custom Skylrk stuff, which is so cute,” she said of her husband’s fashion brand. “My vibe with him is cozy and yummy and cute and simple.”
Bieber again noted that she’d like to have “more than one” kid with Justin, saying some days it’s two, and others it’s five. She also dove into her cute morning wake-up routine with the toddler, which starts around 7 a.m. and includes waking Jack up at 7:30 after first getting in her early sunshine fix and getting herself together a bit before going to fetch her son.
“Kids are just so yummy in the morning when they first wake up,” she said. “They’re just so smushy. Then sometimes I like to, this is going to sound so crazy, get on a vibrational plate, which is a newer thing in my routine. It helps get the lymphatic system going. And then usually it’s chill time. My son loves to make coffee with me. So we hang, have family time in the morning, and then I hop into a workout.”
Bieber shared her in-car playlist these days, which includes the new Don Toliver Octane album, a lot of Stevie Wonder, as well as Olivia Dean’s The Art of Loving LP and heavy doses of SZA and Frank Ocean. And, yes, like the rest of us, she was fascinated with the fashion passion John F. Kenny Jr./ Carolyn Bessette series Love Story, but if she’s being honest, what she’s really ripping her way through now is the entire Game of Thrones epic.
Though the Bieber’s like to keep their private lives private for the most part, Hailey did give a glimpse at their adventure watching Justin’s Coachella comeback set over the weekend, including posting snaps of Jack with a “Bieberchella” temporary arm tat and one in which he rocks baby Birkenstocks.
