The GR 131 on Gran Canaria begins in the bustle of Maspalomas, among beach promenades, towering hotels, and crowds of people. But as soon as the trail leaves the coast, the landscape changes dramatically. It climbs into a rugged mountain world of barrancos, pine forests, and striking rock formations such as Roque Nublo, accompanied by views of Teide rising above the sea of clouds. After days in the mountains, the island section finally ends where the Atlantic comes back into view – in the relaxed harbor town of Agaete. …
