First Look: Salewa Pedroc 2

Calling the Italian Dolomites otherworldly does a disservice to other worlds. The fantastical alpine terrain looks like an artist’s vision of what mountains could be. With all that scenery to take in, and one of the planet’s best hut-to-hut trail systems, it’s no surprise that locals like to pack light and zip around the wilderness, pursuing the ultimate in trail freedom. It’s also no surprise that Salewa, which has been refining alpine gear here since 1935, channels this Dolomites-based approach into its design philosophy, and has created a shoe to match.

Developed and tested in Salewa’s backyard, the Pedroc 2 prioritizes low weight, protection, and dynamic movement. At 12.37 ounces per shoe (men’s), the Pedroc 2 is a lightweight hybrid that can swing in either direction, from cruising fast on a high-mileage day to backpacking with a light pack.

You don’t get this much versatility because of one feature. Rather, it’s the sum of the parts. A 10mm heel-to-toe drop promotes a forward-rolling gait for momentum that supports efficiency over long distances. Paired with a relatively flexible forefoot and stable heel structure enabled by the proprietary 3F heel lock system, the shoe encourages smooth transitions step by step, mile over mile, without sacrificing control on uneven terrain. A supple EVA midsole gives even stone slabs a cushy bounce.

None of that would matter without excellent traction. A directional lug pattern designed for multi-surface grip can tackle anything you’ll find in mixed alpine terrain (loose gravel, damp rock, compact dirt, splooshy mud, lingering snow). The outsole provides consistent bite without excessive stiffness, providing a smooth stride even on tricky trail sections.

Durability and weather protection are also dialed for all-conditions performance. The tough, custom mesh upper gets reinforced in high-wear zones to increase abrasion resistance while maintaining airflow.

More to love: A wide forefoot boosts comfort on long days, when feet swell. The fit also improves stability by allowing your toes to splay naturally as you grip rocks and roots. Reflective elements in the styling add visibility—great for safety when hikes go late or start early, or for urban outings.

Tough, light, nimble: The Pedroc 2 is for anyone who wants freedom to roam.
