If you want to cut pack weight, there are few quicker ways to do it than multiuse gear, which let you eliminate entire items from your setup. Six Moon Designs understood the assignment when they created the Gatewood Cape, a combination rain cape and floorless solo shelter than weighs just 11 ounces and does the job of a jacket, pack cover, and tent all in one. Wear it as a cape and the silicone-coated 15-denier polyester fabric keeps precip off of your and your gear. In camp, the shelter pitches quickly with a trekking pole, providing 35 square feet of coverage. In a test for Backpacker on California’s Catalina Island, James Stout said it was “more than capable of standing up to rain or even snow,” and noted the built-in stash pocket provided a convenient place to keep his headlamp. Bonus: In the worst weather, you can open the neck hole, stand up, and be instantly ready to go. Let’s see you do that with a normal tent.
