As you emerge from the Great Smokies National Park, the trail follows a beautiful stream filled canyon. It has waterfalls and all kinds of fauna and foliage different than what the higher elevations that the past week in the Smokies had you traversing. You hit the lowest elevation point of this section at the Pigeon River bridge and the Interstate 40 under crossing.
