According to the museum at Amacolola Falls State Park, Benton MacKaye’s original vision for the AT was to have the southern end at the high point of Alabama, Cheaha Mountain. The local clubs that had formed all along the route to build the trail in the 1920s, 30s and 40s had difficulty in that area gathering support for construction and maintenance of the trail so the original southern terminus was set Mt Oglethorpe Georgia. Northwest Georgia has a long and deep tradition of moonshine production. …
